Nourishing Compassion in Challenging Times

To help us get through challenging times that require us to be at our best to succeed, Wendy and Sean have teamed up to offer an opportunity for us to engage in regular healing and reenergizing practice. With a motivation to create the conditions for personal nurturing to manifest, each session will focus on our body, our speech, and our mind, in line with our Buddhist tradition. This self-nurturing can then become the cause for each of us to manifest the loving kindness, non-judgmental inclusion (if not acceptance or agreement), support, and compassion that the world around us so desperately needs, especially during these degenerate times that our teachers have cautioned us about for so long.

For the body, we will perform extremely basic stretches and yoga exercises to create the conditions for a stable body to arise. A stable body is necessary for our words and our thoughts arise with equal stability. Not intended to be a yoga practice (already covered by our Tuesday yoga classes), there is no need for special attire or yoga mats. The exercises are suitable for everyone. Approximate time will be 15 minutes.

For the speech, we will perform Chenrezig, Hayagriva, Manjushri, Green Tara and Medicine Buddha mantra recitations. The mantra of Chenrezig develops compassion within ourselves and for all sentient beings. Hayagriva is the wrathful form of Chenrezig and the mantra is especially helpful to eliminate diseases, obstacles and challenging conditions. The mantra of Manjushri develops our wisdom and our understanding of reality. The mantra of Green Tara helps to remove obstacles, to bring quick resolution to difficult situations. And, the mantra of the Medicine Buddha helps to promote healing of all forms within ourselves and others. Approximate time will be 15 minutes, about 3 minutes each mantra.

For the mind, we will perform stabilizing and analytical meditations to help calm our mind and bring perspective and insight into various aspects of our mind, like patience, loving-kindness, love and compassion, etc.. We will end our session with a dedication for equanimity to arise within us and others, leading to peace, understanding and coming together. Approximate time will be 30 minutes.

As part of this session we will also incorporate chakra balancing techniques. Prior awareness of and understanding of chakras and their associated energies is useful but not necessary to benefit from these techniques, which require nothing more than listening to specific music tones and seeing corresponding colors while breathing mindfully.
