Refuge and Lay Vow Ceremony

Resident teacher Geshe Ngawang Tenley will offer Refuge vows and perform a Refuge ceremony. Officially taking Refuge in this way is often viewed in the west as the difference between "studying Buddhism" and "being Buddhist," and is a foundational step of the path, and not to be taken lightly. If you are interested in receiving the vows, please consider that doing so assumes:

* You have confidence in the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha) as the valid path out of
suffering, toward happiness and eventual buddhahood.

* You have confidence in Geshe Ngawang Tenley as a valid Buddhist teacher and are ready to take him as a guru.

* You have not taken Refuge before with another Tibetan Mahayana teacher.

Geshe-la reminds us that these vows are making a commitment, and only appropriate if you are already familiar with the Center and have some of the classes we offer or Geshe Tsulga-la offered in the past. This doesn't mean you have to have attended Geshe Tenley's classes, but any of Kurukulla Center's classes, at least a few times.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche said, "The minute we take the vows (until death for Pratimoksha vows, and until enlightenment for bodhisattva and tantric vows), day and night we collect merit all the time by living according to those vows." However, if you refrain from certain actions without having taken the vows, you do not accumulate the merit.

Thus it is important for us to have a clear understanding of all levels of vows, and accept and abide by them at all times.

NOTE: In order to take refuge or lay vows it is required that you meet with Geshe Tenley beforehand. To set up an appointment, please contact Kimber

If you have any questions please contact Marianne.
