Many of us are familiar with the custom at Kurukulla Center to bow or make a partial or full prostration before images of the Buddha and as well as our teachers before they begin instruction. Our teachers also prostrate prior to teaching out of respect for what they will teach. Prostrations become particularly powerful when integrated into a practice which contains the four opponent powers*, such as the Thirty-five Confession Buddhas. This practice is also known as The Bodhisattva’s Confession of Downfalls. During this practice, we prostrate while reciting the names of the Thirty-five Buddhas that we have visualized. At the conclusion, we make a realistic promise to abstain from specific negativities of body, speech and mind. Doing so leads us to happiness and away from problems in this life and closer to our goal of the ultimate happiness of complete enlightenment, which allows us to be of greatest benefit to others.

Geshe-la’s teaching will explain who the Thirty-five Buddhas are and why we are encouraged to do this practice as often as possible, preferably daily. For additiional reading, information on both the actual practice as well as commentaries are available in the FPMT Foundation Store as well as in Purification Practice in Tibetan Buddhism by Geshe Jampa Gyatso.

This class meets for five Wednesday nights. All are welcome to join in.

*refuge in the Three Jewels; recognition of our nonvirtuous actions; carrying out a remedy; resolution to refrain from committing negativities.
