Geshe Tenley will lead a one-day retreat on Lamrim, on Sunday, June 22, with meditations on the lamrim prayer The Foundation of all Good Qualities, by Lama Tsongkhapa. This is the fourth in a series of one-day retreats Geshe-la will be leading this year. The retreat is open to anyone – there is no requirement to have received any particular initiations to participate.
The lamrim ("graduated path") refers to a textual tradition which arose from Lama Atisha Dipamkara Shrijnana's 11th century masterpiece of Buddhist literature, "A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment," which extracts the 84,000 teachings of the Buddha and organizes them into clear steps in the path to enlightenment.
"If we put effort into the work of generating the gradual path to enlightenment, this not only frees us and makes this present life happy, it brings happiness in all our future lives. Not only that, it frees us completely from all the delusions of suffering, ignorance. Not only that, by achieving enlightenment we are able to do perfect work for each sentient being, to free them from suffering and bring them to enlightenment. This is great work. Following the holy Dharma, the stages of the path to enlightenment, of course, even if it takes three countless great eons, many billions of lifetimes, to accomplish this work, it is great work. Nothing, no time, is wasted."
-- Lama Zopa Rinpoche, from the 12th Kopan Course, 1979
