Amitayus is one of the main deities in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Amitayus practices are done to enhance one’s lifespan, wisdom, and merit, and to mitigate the effects of negative acts. This initiation includes taking the bodhisattva vows, and is a special opportunity to engage in a practice that has the potential to extend the length of our lives.
As we prepare for this initiation, we should sincerely analyze our motivation – do we simply want to prolong our lives in order to continue pursuing short-term pleasures, or are we motivated to increase our lifespan so we can progress on the spiritual path and work toward removing our mental afflictions and increasing our altruism? When we have the beneficent thought to help others, we can eagerly and thoughtfully embrace this precious opportunity to receive this initiation from H.E. Tatsak Rinpoche.
Please note that when you receive an initiation from a lama, you enter into a relationship in which the lama becomes your vajra teacher. We are incredibly fortunate that H.E. the Kundeling Tatsak Choktrul Rinpoche is a fully qualified master, for whom Geshe Tenley has great devotion and respect. Geshe Tenley requested Kundeling Rinpoche to visit Kurukulla Center for our benefit. You are also welcome to attend the initiation as a blessing, and receive positive imprints. With this intention, you do not receive the bodhisattva vows, nor have a daily commitment if there is one given.
Please avoid eating black food (meat, fish, eggs, onion, garlic and radishes) the morning before the initiation. Information regarding any commitments will be provided closer to the event. In order to receive the initiation, one must attend in person. That is, one will not be able to participate online.

His Eminence is known as an emanation of Manjushri and is a highly revered teacher in the Gelug tradition. For many of us, this will be a rare opportunity to receive teachings and blessings from an incarnate lama of such realization, wisdom, and spiritual accomplishment. We sincerely hope you will be able to join us for this teaching event.

The first Kundeling Tatsak Choktrul Trichen Baso Choekyi Gyaltsen was born in 1402. He was the brother of Khedrup Rinpoche (one of Lama Tsongkhapa's two main disciples) and was himself considered to be one of Je Tsongkhapa's best students. He was enthroned in 1463 as the Ganden Tripa, the highest seat in Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. During the era of the great master Je Tsongkhapa, His Eminence received all of Tsongkhapa's teachings, in order to take responsibility for preserving and spreading the precious teachings of the Buddha.
The vast accomplishments of the succeeding incarnations include having served as abbott of the great Chamdo Monastery and tutor to both the 11th and 13th Dalai Lamas. The previous incarnations of Kundeling Rinpoche also twice acted as regent for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This remarkable succession of incarnations has demonstrated an unflagging commitment and dedication to the conservation and flourishing of the Buddhadharma.
The 13th incarnation in this great lineage, His Eminence received a geshe degree from Drepung Monastic University in Mundgod, Karnataka, South India and studied tantric rituals at Gyudme Monastery, in Hunsur, South India. He has received many teachings and initiations from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and many other highly revered masters.
