VIRTUAL CLASS: The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas with Dr. Nicholas Ribush

The new year is here, an auspicious time to take stock of how we have lived the previous year. Are we happy? Did we use our time meaningfully and focus on activities that align with our values, or did the myriad diversions in our material world distract us to chase after what is probably of only short-term value? Perhaps we even did actions which we regret. This reflection can be a useful motivation to reconsider how we can change our behavior moving forward, embracing with enthusiasm the pursuit of our well-being in a way that also brings benefit to those around us.

We are very fortunate that while resident teacher Geshe Tenley is away in India on pilgrimage,  Dr. Nicholas Ribush, Founding Director of Kurukulla Center and Director of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, has accepted our request to teach.

Tibetan Buddhist teachings offer step-by-step guidance on how to bring happiness to ourselves and others. Dr. Nick will give teachings on The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, composed by Thogme Sangpo. This is a remarkable and inspirational guidebook which begins by leading us through preliminary practices that show us the importance of spiritual practice, then gives advice on dealing with difficulties as a bodhisattva would, by bravely facing problems with courage. While some advice may seem out of our reach, we all have the potential to transform our minds into the fully awakened state of ultimate happiness, so we are encouraged to practice as a bodhisattva would as best as we can.

The text we will be using can be located here.

The outline of The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas can be found here.

Dr. Nicholas Ribush, MB, BS, is a graduate of Melbourne University Medical School (1964) who first encountered Buddhism at Kopan Monastery, Nepal, in 1972. Since then he has been a student of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche and a full time worker for their international organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). Dr. Nick is the Founding Director of Kurukulla Center and current Director of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive.
