May 17 – June 15 is recognized as the month of Saka Dawa in the Tibetan lunar calendar and considered an especially auspicious time to undertake spiritual practices. As a way to remember the power and benefit of Shakyamuni Buddha's legacy, we are holding several group practices during this period. Today we invite all to join in the recitation of texts from the Kangyur. The Kangyur or "Translated Words" consists of teachings given by Buddha Shakyamuni organized into 108 volumes (the other main grouping in the Tibetan canon is the Tengyur or "Translated Commentaries").
We look forward to celebrating Saka Dawa with this special gathering of the western and Tibetan communities! Our Tibetan friends will recite from the Kangyur, while westerners can quietly recite sutras and prayers of their choice, such as those suggested below. Geshe Tenley is encouraging us to take advantage of this special time by joining in this group event.
The gompa (meditation hall) will be open from 9:30 AM - 8:00 PM, and there will be a Lama Chöpa/Guru Puja at 5:00 PM. Please join at whatever time works for your schedule – all are welcome!
Suggested Prayer Recitations (copies will be available in the gompa for in-person participants)
